The Republic of Ireland, consisting of 26 counties and making up most of the island, gained political independence from Northern Ireland and the rest of the United Kingdom in the 1920s. The west coast of Ireland mostly consists of cliffs, hills and low mountains (the highest point being Carrauntohil), making it perfect for hiking enthusiasts.
The interior of the country is relatively flat land, traversed by rivers such as the River Shannon and several large lakes or loughs, and large areas of bogland. From beautiful granite hills and low ancient mountains to a coastline of cliffs and sandy beaches, and from misty lakes and bogland to lush forest, visitors will enjoy the diversity and breathtaking beauty of the terrain which is perfect for exploring either on foot or by bicycle.
