Project Summary

coillte_2Coillte make extensive use of OSi digital mapping and air flown orthophotography and Lidar imagery for the planning and management of their forestry resources. Lidar imagery gives Coillte access to tree height information which informs their tree felling rotations based on crop maturity. OSi wind mapping is also vital for planning to prevent the spread of fires in forest locations.

In 2008 alone, Coillte built 117 km of new roads (through forest parks) and upgraded a further 167 km of existing roads – each having to be carefully planned using OSi mapping.

3 D modeling allows Coillte to access the impact of new forestry development on existing resources and they can plan accordingly in line with their environmental protection standards and policies.

OSi Data Bases employed

  • Large Scale Mapping.
  • Small and Medium Scales Mapping.
  • High and low level imagery and orthophotography.
  • Height models and Lidar models.
